I felt like Jeannette Walls&#8217; mother. Do you know Jeannette, the MSNBC news correspondent, author of <em>The Glass Castle</em>? Well I don&#8217;t either. But her book is quite a read. (And you might like to put it on your Christmas list.) Jeannette had very humble beginnings, including regularly seeing rats visit the sugar bowl on her kitchen counter while growing up in West Virginia. Years later, when Jeannette was on her way to an MSNBC Christmas party in New York City, she looked out her car window and spied her mother. She was doubled over in a dumpster by the curb, trash picking. (And this was not unusual.) Strangely, her mother seemed to somehow prefer (even thrive) on this lifestyle. You&#8217;ll just have to read it yourself to get the scoop.</p>
<p>So let me explain <em>why</em> I was trash picking. (I&#8217;m sure Jeannette&#8217;s mother had her reasons too!) I&#8217;d just thrown away the glass top to a cheap dollar store candle. I dropped it in the trash can, then thought hard. How could I upcycle a cheap glass candle cover? Then it hit me. I could make a <strong><em>DIY Photo Paperweight</em></strong>! So I fished it back out (washed it!) and made this <strong><em>DIY Photo Paperweight</em></strong>. It&#8217;s simple and would make a great last minute economical, personalized Christmas gift for someone special. You may already have everything you need to make it.</p>
<p><a href="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight2.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2258" src="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight2.jpg" alt="DIY Photo Paperweight. <p><em>Materials List: </em></p>
<ul>
<li>Photo</li>
<li>Twine or ribbon (optional)</li>
<li>Scissors</li>
<li>Cardboard</li>
<li>Felt</li>
<li>Tacky glue and rubber cement</li>
<li>Clear glass candle coaster or the glass top to a cheap dollar store type candle</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight4.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2260 size-medium" src="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight4-300x266.jpg" alt="DIY Photo Paperweight. <p style="text-align: center;"> Use the flat glass top to a candle.(above)</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight3.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2259 size-medium" src="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight3-300x272.jpg" alt="DIY Photo Paperweight. Economical last minute, personalized Christmas gift for everyone on your list." width="300" height="272" srcset="https://www.throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight3-300x272.jpg 300w, https://www.throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight3.jpg 680w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"> Or an inexpensive clear glass candle coaster. (Buy it in the craft store in the candle section.)</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em>Directions</em>:</p>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;">Wash the glass well with glass cleaner.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Cut photo into a round and place in the circle of the coaster or glass candle top.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">I tested some drinking glasses in my cabinet &#8217;til I found one that fit inside the center circle well. I traced the photo around the glass, cut it out and the photo fit perfectly.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Using the same method, I cut several cardboard circles to fill in the back until it was level with the edge.<a href="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight5.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2273 size-medium" src="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight5-300x257.jpg" alt="DIY Photo Paperweight. Economical last minute, personalized Christmas gift for everyone on your list." width="300" height="257" srcset="https://www.throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight5-300x257.jpg 300w, https://www.throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight5.jpg 680w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></li>
<li>Cut another circle just a little larger, and use rubber cement to attach felt to the back of that cardboard. <a href="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight6.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2274 size-medium" src="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight6-300x268.jpg" alt="DIY Photo Paperweight. Economical last minute, personalized Christmas gift for everyone on your list." width="300" height="268" srcset="https://www.throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight6-300x268.jpg 300w, https://www.throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight6.jpg 680w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a>Use a light color so it wouldn&#8217;t show through the edges. Then attach the slightly larger felt covered cardboard to the back of the paperweight with tacky glue.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">I wrapped the edges of my paperweight (below) with twine. You could also use ribbon. Or just leave it plain.</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight7.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2276" src="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight7.jpg" alt="DIY Photo Paperweight. Economical last minute, personalized Christmas gift for everyone on your list." width="400" height="428" srcset="https://www.throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight7.jpg 680w, https://www.throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Photo-Paperweight7-281x300.jpg 281w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Voila, your own <em><strong>DIY Photo Paperweight</strong></em>!</p>

From the edibles we gift to the chocolates we receive. And I do love my chocolate. Dark, very dark. Yes, dark chocolate is an essential in my life.</p>
<p>But I recently came across this <em><strong>DIY Clementine Wreath</strong></em>. I think it&#8217;s genius. It&#8217;s quick. Healthy. Colorful. Festive. It&#8217;s <em>different</em>. No baking. No dishes. <del>A man could do this</del>. (S<em>o kidding</em>. Forgive me? Seriously, some of the best cooks I know are men.) But who doesn&#8217;t love a plump, juicy clementine? This is a fun project for the kids and grandkids to help with too.</p>
<p>I can even see&#8230; MATH!</p>
<p>&#8220;Johnny &#8212; we&#8217;re making three clementine wreaths for your teacher gifts today. There are seven clementines in each wreath. How many clementines will we need?&#8221; Ok, you get the point. (And it&#8217;s just more fun talking about chocolate.)</p>
<p><a href="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Clementine-Wreath4.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1623" src="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Clementine-Wreath4.jpg" alt="Festive, easy Christmas gift. <ul>
<li>7 clementines (or more!)</li>
<li>a long roll of cellophane wrap (NOT PLASTIC SARAN WRAP)</li>
<li>tape (Scotch tape or packing tape. I liked packing tape better, sturdier.)</li>
<li>twine</li>
<li>ribbon</li>
</ul>
<p><em><strong>Directions</strong></em></p>
<p>1. Lay down a 6 &#8211; 8 inch wide strip of cellophane wrap, length-wise. (Depending on the width of your cellophane roll, you may need to tape two pieces together. I did.)</p>
<p>2. Line the clementines  in a straight line on top of the cellophane, down the center.  Leave space in between each clementine.</p>
<p>3. Fold the cellophane together and tape together at intervals.</p>
<p>4. Tie a piece of twine in between each clementine.</p>
<p>5. Twist into a circle and tie a knot (or tape!) the two ends together. (Then twist and shout! Because you are almost finished&#8230;)</p>
<p>6. Tie a pretty bow and add a gift tag.  I like red for Christmas.  (But that&#8217;s just me.)</p>
<p><a href="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Clementine-Wreath5.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1624 size-large" src="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Clementine-Wreath5-416x900.jpg" alt="Festive, easy Christmas gift. <p style="text-align: center;"> Line up the clementines in a row on the cellophane and tape it shut.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Clementine-Wreath2.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1615" src="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Clementine-Wreath2.jpg" alt="Festive, easy Christmas gift. <p>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Clementine-Wreath1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1614" src="http://throughherlookingglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DIY-Clementine-Wreath1.jpg" alt="Festive, easy Christmas gift.
